A message from Keltie Jones, JD, DBA, Associate Vice-President, Student Experience at MSVU:
Welcome and welcome back, MSVU students!
The Student Experience team has been busy getting ready for another great year. We have lots of updates to share – starting with the highlights below.
A reminder that you can find a full list of student services on the MSVU website – there’s and A to Z services listing here). And you can also drop me a line any time or stop by for a visit (Evaristus 201).
Wishing you a great year ahead,
– Keltie
1. Same day academic advising – on now!
You’ve no doubt got questions, and your academic advisors have answers. Whether you need to select courses, make changes to your schedule, or have general questions about your program, they are here for you!
Academic Advisors are available for half-hour same-day appointments in person and online from September 5 to 13. Stop by the Centre for Academic Advising and Student Success (Seton 303) to reserve your in-person appointment, or call 902-457-6657 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. to book your online appointment. Reserve early in the day to ensure you get a spot.
2. New website for academic support services
We’ve launched a new website designed to help you more easily connect with just the right academic support service. Visit msvu.ca/academicsupport.
3. Need a doctor?
We recommend getting set-up with the MSVU Health Office’s Pomelo app now so that booking a doctor’s appointment is a piece of cake when you need one (you can book through the app). We’ve streamlined the process to register for Pomelo this year – find instructions here.
4. The Black Student Support Office is turning 10
Located in Seton 314, the Black Student Support Office provides holistic support for all Black students/students of African descent through the lens of Africentricity. They’ve got celebrations in the works to mark their 10th anniversary (including 10 cakes for 10 years – yum!). Be sure to stop by.
5. New faces
We’ve welcomed some new leaders to MSVU recently – all here to help ensure your MSVU journey is as amazing as it can be. Meet:
– Lori Francis, Vice-President Academic and Provost
– Isabelle Nault, Vice-President, Administration
– Angela Barrett-Jewers, Director, Athletics and Recreation starting September 25
– Todd MacDonald, Manager of Residence Life
6. Student leadership opportunities available
The MSVU Students’ Union is seeking students interested in making an impact through student government positions – a great way to get engaged on campus. They’ve got a by-election coming up for the President position and vacant seats on the Student Representative Council. All positions come with a stipend, and the President receives a salary.
7. Student jobs and in-course bursaries available
Through our Student Works program, we are offering some excellent on-campus job opportunities for students at MSVU starting this fall. Apply now via Career Connects (log-in required).
The MSVU in-course bursary program opens to applications each fall. These are non-repayable awards that are based on financial need. The application will be available online in October, with a deadline of early November. Be sure to apply!
8. Peer supports available
As students themselves, Peer Support Workers at MSVU relate to the effects university stress can have on your mental health. They offer a safe, inclusive, and confidential opportunity to chat about what’s on your mind, get assistance navigating campus services, or simply hang out and decompress (in the peer support lounge).
9. MSVU SAFE App and Mount Alert
Ok, maybe these aren’t brand new, but they’re important services so we had to include them on this list.
The MSVU SAFE App and Mount Alert are the two free e-tools you need to help keep you safe on campus. MSVU SAFE brings safety services into the palm of your hand (like walk safe and work alone features). Mount Alert is our mass notification system designed to get urgent messages to all on campus asap if a situation arises that poses a threat to your safety – not to mention information about weather closures.
10. We have hens
We’re not just a campus for crows anymore. This summer, we welcomed four resident hens to our Community Garden. They made an appearance on CTV news not too long ago – check that out here or pop by the Community Garden to meet them.
