During spring convocation ceremonies to be held May 15 and 16, Mount Saint Vincent University will recognize the achievements of several hundred students and bestow an honorary degree on Dr. Stephanie Scott.

About Dr. Stephanie Scott

A leading doctor, teacher and researcher, Dr. Stephanie Scott is dedicated to medical education and to removing barriers to health care for women.

Dr. Stephanie Scott standing in front of medical equipment in a research labDr. Scott joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Dalhousie University in 2015 and completed her MSc in Health Professions Education from Maastricht University in 2020. She was promoted to Associate Professor at Dalhousie University in 2022. Since 2023, she has served as the Division Head for Gynecologic Oncology at Dalhousie and has successfully advocated for improved resources and access for patients living with and beyond gynecologic cancers.

The inaugural recipient of the Standing Ovation award from the Dalhousie Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology for her contribution to resident education, Dr. Scott served as the surgical skills and simulation coordinator for gynecology within the department’s residency program and led the redesign of its lab-based surgical curriculum. She has also served on the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons’ nucleus and examination committees for Gynecologic Oncology since 2018.

A health care innovator, Dr. Scott was the first surgeon to perform robotic surgery for gynecologic cancer in Atlantic Canada. She has published 21 peer-reviewed journal articles and, together with local and national collaborators, has obtained more than 1.7 million dollars in research funding to improve outcomes for patients with ovarian cancer.

Dr. Scott is originally from Burlington, Ontario and completed medical school and residency training at Western University in London, Ontario in 2013. She subsequently completed a Royal College fellowship in gynaecologic oncology at the University of British Columbia in 2015.

Her busy professional life is matched by a busy home life shared with her husband and three children. Somehow, she still finds the time for her passion of running; Dr. Scott most recently completed the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 3:25:05.

Convocation Ceremony Details
Dr. Scott will be honoured during the convocation ceremony taking place at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 16, 2025. Convocation ceremonies will be held in the Seton Academic Centre Auditorium and will be livestreamed on YouTube and Facebook.

About the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa
MSVU recognizes distinguished individuals whose accomplishments are consistent with the mission of the university by granting the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters (honoris causa) – an honour which can only be bestowed by the University Chancellor at the request of Senate. The university honours worthy recipients who have contributed to the betterment of society and humanity in any field, but in particular, improvement of the status of women, contribution to higher education, humanitarian and social service, involvement with and fostering of culture and the arts, or leadership in a field of endeavour. The convocation at which the degree is awarded is greatly enriched by the presence of honorary graduands who share the joy of the occasion.
