Students will have more options for unique programs at Mount Saint Vincent University should all of the proposed changes in the new, approved Academic Plan be implemented.
“The plan includes some exciting changes to the academic mix of programs and degrees at the university,” says Kathryn Laurin, president and Vice Chancellor of the Mount. “It provides a solid direction for future academic planning.”
The Mount’s Academic Plan for 2009-2010 proposes a new BA in Humanities, and a proposed BA in Applied Social Science – both of which continue to honour the school’s social justice roots.
The plan also looks at addressing the teacher shortages in French and Mathematics through offering a collaborative PhD in Educational Studies with Acadia and St. Francis Xavier Universities. It would also see the university build on its 30 years of leadership in Distance Education by adding more complete degrees available via multi-mode delivery.
“As part of the Mount’s strategic plan, Destination 2012 and its new vision, the Mount has committed to becoming the national leader in creating the best university experience for all members of our community,” says Laurin. “This plan is a key tool in achieving that.”
The plan was developed after a very thorough and consultative process by the Mount’s Committee on Academic Policy and Planning (CAPP). CAPP considered trends over the last five years in terms of applications, registrations and the number of graduates, as well as the results of external reviews. Most importantly, it considered feedback from the community.
“We already have a solid reputation for offering a unique mix of liberal arts and science as well as professional programs,” says Laurin. “That will only be enhanced through this new Academic Plan.”
