Ramona LumpkinDr. Ramona Lumpkin, President and Vice-Chancellor of the Mount, is this year’s recipient of the YMCA of Western Ontario Women of Excellence Award in the Education, Training & Development category.

Every two years, the YMCA recognizes women who have achieved significant accomplishments, contributed to their local, regional, or national community, embodied the values of the YMCA, and who have served as an inspiration. Honorees are selected from the nominations by a volunteer committee of community leaders, including previous Women of Excellence.

To celebrate the winners’ success, the YMCA of Western Ontario holds a gala called the Women of Excellence Gala to be held on May 3, 2011, in London, Ontario.

It is a unique event with the aim of supporting the YMCA’s goal of developing spirit, mind and body in people of all backgrounds, beliefs, and abilities. At the event, the nine inspiring women from their chosen field will be honored. “I’m honoured to be listed among this group of distinguished women,” said Dr. Lumpkin.

Dr. Lumpkin is being honored for her effort and career accomplishments in the field of adult education and training. With a strong belief that everyone deserves to attain an education, she has had a number of varied achievements. Prior to joining the Mount, Dr. Lumpkin served as the first female principal in Huron University College’s 147-year history. While there, Dr. Lumpkin promoted “community-based learning” programs and encouraged students to become better educated and more engaged citizens. She did this by combining academic study in the classroom with service learning in the community.

Congratulations Dr. Lumpkin on this great accomplishment!
