Honouring insatiable learners, earnest volunteers, outstanding athletes, and consistent achievers
This year’s academic awards reception celebrated notable Mount students across many disciplines for their exceptional academic achievement and commitment. And, at our spring athletic awards banquet, leaders in athletics at the Mount were honoured. Read below for brief bios of a few of these extraordinary students. The full lists of academic and athletic award recipients are available here — academic / athletic.
Katherine (Katie) Cvitkovich
Frances Malloy Award recipient
Katie is a motivated leader with a passion for nutrition education and the ecological issues of food. Most recently, Katie and her teammates competed in the national Mission ImPULSEible competition where their high protein and fibre Greek yogurt popsicle won second place. Additionally, she founded the Mount chapter of Meal Exchange, a national initiative that raises awareness about hunger and educates the community about food security and sustainable food systems.
Joshua Thomas
Academic Excellence Award in Economics recipient
Joshua is a hardworking student who has been consistently named to the Dean’s Honours List at the Mount and was awarded the President’s Scholarship twice. He will be attending the University of Saskatchewan’s graduate program in Economics, a decision revealing his strong interest in justice and equality as the university is dedicated to research in aboriginal studies, a topic Joshua enthusiastically follows.
Alexandrina (Alex) Hanam
Mrs. Angus L. MacDonald Literary Prize in English recipient
Alex’s literary accomplishment is for her work in poetry and in prose (creative non-fiction) – she is the first student from the distance version of the Creative Writing course to receive this award. This means that she wrote her two prize-winning portfolios of original work in six weeks rather than three months, in addition to her other coursework. Additionally, Alex submitted a fictional short story to the Mount Student Creative Writing Awards and won in her category.
Kelsey Clory
Bachelor of Public Relations
2015 ACAA Rod Shoveller Award and 2015 MSVU Sheila & Stephanie Alt Award recipient
Kelsey is a second-year point guard on the Mount Women’s Basketball team, whose connection to sports extends beyond the Mount. She provides outstanding contribution to the community through volunteerism as a Special Olympics assistant coach for track and baseball, Football Nova Scotia coach, flag football referee, and coordinator for junior high all-star basketball games. She is also a supporter for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Kara Hayes
Dyrick McDermott Leader Award recipient
Kara is a fourth-year forward on the Mount Women’s Basketball team, one of the 2015 MVPs and is a three-time recipient of the Dyrick McDermott Leader Award. As the co-captain of the Women’s Basketball team and an avid volunteer, she embodies a commitment to family and community. Throughout her work with the Canada Winter Games and the Mount’s Shinerama, Caritas Day and Basketball Camp initiatives, she has shown great sportsmanship and leadership qualities.
Congratulations to all Mount 2015 academic and athletic award recipients!
