Biography:

My educational history includes a BEd in Home Economics (UNB), a BScOT in occupational therapy (Dalhouisie), an MEd in Counselling (UNB), a PhD in Rehabilitation Science from Queen’s University, and a recent MA in Family Studies and Gerontology from MSVU. My work history includes a long career as a mental health occupational therapist where I worked on an acute care psychiatry unit and in a community clinic setting. My research interests evolved from my work experience and from my continuing education where I studied the impact on mothers when a child is diagnosed with schizophrenia, the suitability of group homes to support recovery in mental illness, and strategies for suicide prevention. I worked for six years as an Assistant Professor at Dalhousie University (School of Occupational Therapy), teaching courses related to mental health, aging and fieldwork preparation. Throughout most of this time, I served as Fieldwork Coordinator supporting local, national and international fieldwork experiences. More recently, with Horizon Health NB, I worked as Prevention Coordinator in a role focused on mental health promotion and suicide prevention where in collaboration with MSVU professor, Deborah Norris (as thesis supervisor) I completed a pilot study using narrative research methods to capture stories of seniors and suicide. Next steps include extending this research to obtain a more diverse representation.
