The nonprofit sector in Canada contributes significantly to the development of societal wellbeing and provides a large economic benefit. It is estimated there are 171,000 registered nonprofit sector organizations in Canada employing over 2 million people and with annual revenues of more than $112 billion. The Department of Business Administration and Tourism offers a Major, Concentration or Minor in Nonprofit Leadership. Also offered is a Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership which is available to students in Arts and Science degrees, and other professional programs, as well as those currently working in the nonprofit sector.

Undergraduate Academic Calendar Information

The Bachelor of Business Administration with a Nonprofit Leadership Major allows you to specialize in nonprofit leadership. After completing ten units of introductory coursework, you will then complete the core nonprofit sector courses (Introduction to the Nonprofit Sector, Nonprofit Leadership: People Management, Nonprofit Leadership: Governance & Strategy, Not-for-Profit Marketing, Nonprofit Financial Management), plus related electives from the Business Administration and Arts and Science programs. You are also able to enroll in the optional co-operative education program.

The BBA with a Nonprofit Leadership Concentration will provide students with the option to have a Concentration (four units) in Nonprofit Leadership. For the concentration you will complete the core nonprofit sector courses as well as one and a half units from Arts and Science electives.

The BBA with a Nonprofit Leadership Minor will provide students with the option to have a Minor (three units) in Nonprofit Leadership. For the minor you will complete the core nonprofit sector courses as well as one half unit from Arts and Science electives.

The Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership can be completed in one year of full-time study, over a multiyear period of part-time study, or in conjunction with another degree. The Certificate consists of eight courses (Introduction to the Nonprofit Sector, Nonprofit Leadership: People Management, Nonprofit Leadership: Governance & Strategy, Principles of Marketing, Not-for-profit Marketing, Nonprofit Financial Management) and two electives chosen from courses from the Department of Business Administration, Department of Communication Studies, Women’s Studies, Political Studies, Canadian Studies, and Sociology.

Not in the BBA program? You can still minor in Nonprofit Leadership.

Students in other Arts, Science and Professional degree programs may complete a minor in Nonprofit Leadership as per the calendar requirements for the minor.
