Some of the region’s aspiring food product developers will descend on the Mount for an all-day competition on March 30. The Mission ImPULSEible event, organized in partnership with Pulse Canada, is designed to showcase the work of university student nutrition teams tasked with creating healthy, marketable food products using beans, chickpeas, lentils, or other ‘pulses’ as the chief ingredient.
Mount Assistant Professor Bohdan Luhovyy, organizer of the competition, says the competition is a real-life simulation of food product pitching. “We know that through preparation and research for the event, students will discover the important health benefits of pulses,” says Dr. Luhovyy. “They will also benefit greatly from the opportunity to present their products in a professional situation.”
During the competition, nine student teams from Atlantic Canada will present their food products to a panel of judges including academic, government and food industry representatives. Teams will be judged on criteria including taste, aroma, visual appeal, and marketability of the products. In addition to a cash prize, the winning team will have the opportunity to compete against other provincial winners in a national competition in Montreal this coming June.
The Mount’s Applied Human Nutrition program is recognized as among the leaders in Canada. Mount Applied Human Nutrition grads work across Canada and internationally as dieticians, nutritionists, food scientists, and in a variety of other careers.
Students, staff, and members of the public are invited to take part in tastings during the event. The tasting portion of the competition will take place on Friday, March 30 at 2:00 PM in the Seton Academic Centre Faculty Lounge (404/405).
