The MSVU Co-op Employer of the Year Award was established in 2009 to recognize the important contributions of the university’s co-op employer partners and mark the 30th anniversary of co-operative education at MSVU.

This National Day of Work Integrated Learning, we’re pleased to spotlight the latest recipients of the MSVU Co-op Employer of the Year Awards.

Award selection criteria include consideration of the work environment, leadership and mentorship, the supervisor’s demonstrated support of student learning, and the employer’s longstanding commitment to co-op.

These award-winning employers are providing excellent work-term opportunities for students and are critical to the success of the university’s co-op program.

Congratulations (and a big thank you!) to our 2024 Co-op Employers of the Year:

“Leah Batstone exceeded every expectation I had for a supervisor. I expected guidance and support, but Leah went far beyond that, fostering an environment where I felt valued, empowered, and encouraged to grow. Unlike in other co-op experiences where supervision often felt hierarchical or task-focused, Leah prioritized building a meaningful connection with me. She took the time to truly understand my goals, strengths, and interests, and tailored my co-op experience to align with them.

Leah’s approach was collaborative and inclusive. She trusted me to make decisions and respected my judgment, treating me as a team member whose input mattered. She believed that if I recommended something or took a specific action, there was always a logical explanation behind it, which she was eager to hear. This level of trust was a significant confidence booster for me. I credit a lot of my new-found confidence as an aspiring public relations professional to Leah because of this. This was reflected in my third co-op and was commented on by my supervisor, who expressed impressiveness with my level of confidence in doing the work without much overseeing needed.

Leah also demonstrated unparalleled attentiveness, remembering details I had shared with her early on, such as my interest in event planning, and finding ways to create opportunities for me to explore these interests. She consistently celebrated my successes, gave constructive feedback with kindness, and advocated for me in ways I had never experienced before. Leah’s performance as a supervisor was not only exemplary but also transformative for my personal and professional development.” – Suwela Pam Vas Vassoa
