Starting this May, new students enrolling in the Bachelor of Education (BEd) program at Mount Saint Vincent University will have the option to complete their degree 10 months earlier with the launch of a new 14-month delivery format for the current BEd (elementary and secondary) program. The university will also continue to offer the existing 20-month delivery option with a September start.

The 14-month BEd delivery option saves on time by offering students an earlier entry point – May rather than September. By starting in May and running continuously, students in the 14-month option will finish the program in June 2026 – compared to April 2027. The new program delivery option has the same course and practicum requirements as the existing 20-month program delivery. MSVU will continue to offer a 20-month BEd delivery option to meet the needs of students who have work or family commitments in the summer semester.

“Our aim in creating a 14-month BEd delivery was to help get more qualified teachers into the classroom faster,” said Dr. Joël Dickinson, President and Vice-Chancellor, Mount Saint Vincent University. “We’re committed to working with our partners in government and across the system to find solutions to the teacher shortage while ensuring that our graduates have the skills, experiences, and supports needed to successfully transition as teachers in today’s demanding P-12 classrooms.”

“I am pleased MSVU is introducing a condensed BEd option that will help get more teachers into classrooms faster,” said Brendan Maguire, Minister of Advanced Education. “It’s great to see our post-secondary institutions stepping up to advance programming that addresses labour market needs, and the needs of Nova Scotians.”

Noted Dr. Dickinson, “I’m grateful for the support of MSVU’s Vice-President Academic & Provost Dr. Lori Francis in leading this change, and to the team in the Faculty of Education, including Dean Dr. Antony Card, the Director of Teacher Education Dr. Eddia Solas, and all faculty, for their commitment to delivering a high quality education that is responsive to the needs of our students and the communities we support.”

The university will admit 225 new BEd students this year, split between May and September. The program has steadily grown its admissions over the past many years.
