Dr. Maya Eichler part of National Defence Policy Review Roundtable
Dr. Maya Eichler is an assistant professor in the departments of political and Canadian studies as well as women’s studies at the Mount; she also holds the Canada Research Chair in Social Innovation and Community Engagement.
Her current research focuses on a new generation of Canadian veteran, and in particular the impact of gender on the experience of military personnel as they transition to civilian life.
Recently, Dr. Eichler was one of 14 defence experts to participate in the National Defence Policy Review Roundtable held in Halifax. In her submission to the roundtable, she asked “is Canada ready to consider what a feminist defence policy might look like?”
Dr. Eichler points out that a feminist defence policy would be reflective of Canadian values and interests, while supporting the health and well-being of military members and veterans. Furthermore, such an approach would better position the military to successfully “fulfill Canada’s international commitments on women, peace and security” by ensuring “gender discrimination and sexual misconduct are explicitly recognized and addressed on an ongoing basis.”
